Zilker

Location: Located in South Central Austin, extending south of Lady Bird Lake, directly northwest to the Barton Hills neighborhood which connects back to Zilker Park via the Barton Hills Greenbelt. Zilker is one of, if not, the most exclusive, fast growing, and desirable neighborhoods to live in South Austin.

History: In 1918 Andrew Jackson Zilker deeded 35 acres surrounding Barton Hills to the City of Austin. The first homes were constructed in the early 1920’s. Vincent Canizzo owned most of the west of Zilker, but in the 1940’s he was forced to sell through eminent domain to the city to build Zilker Elementary. The remaining of the land was split up to build subdivisions of homes.

Architecture: Zilker is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Austin, it has a great mix of older, redone homes and brand new modern mansions. Many of the older homes add character to the neighborhood and are likely completely remodeled on the inside. The newer constructed homes are a mix of modern and mid century, creating an amazing blend of homes throughout the neighborhood.

Recreation: Situated next to its namesake, Zilker Park, the neighborhood features 350 acres on Green spaces, the Austin Trail of Lights, popular venues for music, theater, restaurants and is known for its relaxed bars and patios.
