Barton Hills

Location: Located in South Austin, encompassing part of the 78704 zip code and is surrounded by Zilker Park and Barton Creek. This primarily residential neighborhood is continually one of the most sought after neighborhoods in Austin. Barton Hill is bounded by both South Lamar and the Zilker neighborhood to the east, Barton Springs Road and Zilker Park to the north, Barton Creek to the west and South Capitol Highway 360 to the south.

Architecture: Similar to the Zilker neighborhood and close in proximity, the homes feature a mix of newer mansions, remodeled homes and little bungalows. The neighborhood has a funky “anything goes” mind set when it comes to design, there is a medley of choices from split level new construction to redone cottages.

History: In 1937 William “Uncle Billy” set up on the southern bank of the spring fed, natural Colorado River and named the location after his daughters. His original name for the area didn’t stick but the neighborhood did. Established in the 1940’s and 1950’s by William Barton, hence where the name Barton Springs Pool came from, construction continued into the late 1990’s, and was featured in 1956 as “The world’s largest air conditioned subdivision”.

Recreation: The neighborhood features Barton Creek which is a natural fed pool and one of Austin’s most popular spots in the summer. The neighborhood has gardens, museums, and is close to Zilker Park which hosts ACL. Barton Creek is one of the top destinations for outdoor recreation.
