Eastside
Location: Located just 2 miles from downtown Austin, East Austin is an energetic, diverse mix of housing and culture. Over the past decade, East Austin has undergone rapid development and is becoming one of Austin’s most popular neighborhoods. The boundaries of East Austin include IH-35, Lady Bird Lake, Manor Road and Springdale Road. The eastern section that borders the lake has some well-kept city parks.
History: The district encompasses six square miles in the heart of East Austin and holds the unique distinction for being the only black cultural district in the Lone Star State. The area was originally designated by the city as part of a master plan to house African Americans in a single place, kickstarting a shameful era in Austin history.
Architecture: From stunning, refurbished single-family homes to brand-new condo communities, East Austin can suit nearly every housing need. Evolving East Austin is a diverse area. Early 1900s bungalows give way to modern condos. Further east, you get ethnic, working-class neighborhoods with smaller, well-kept homes, small yards, and strong community pride.
Recreation: East Austin’s convenient location gives residents quick access to some of Austin’s most popular hotspots including, Lady Bird Lake, East 6th Street, Sam’s BBQ; all while cool cocktail bars mingle with Southern-style eateries, including iconic Franklin Barbecue. East Cesar Chavez draws hipsters for drinks, unique art and bands.
